According to the Namibia Statistics Agency (NSA), the annual headline inflation rate in March, as measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI), declined for the second consecutive month, but remained uncomfortably high while the upside risk to the inflation outlook has increased.
The March inflation rate declined to 7 percent y-o-y from 7,8 percent in February and 8,2 percent in January.
The food and non-alcoholic beverages sub-index increased by 7,3 percent y-o-y last month, much lower than the 11,3 percent increase recorded in February.
The alcoholic beverages and tobacco sub-index increased by 4,4 percent in March, lower than the 5,4 percent increase in the preceding month, mainly attributable to lower growth in alcoholic beverage prices.
The housing, utilities, gas and other fuels sub-index increased by 9,4 percent, slightly lower than the 9,6 percent y-o-y increase recorded in February, driven by slightly lower electricity, gas and other fuel price growth.
The transport sub-index increased by 6,5 percent in March, compared to a 4,7 percent y-o-y increase in the previous month, driven by an increase in the price growth of the operational cost of personal transport equipment.
The monthly CPI inflation rate dropped to 0,1 percent in March from 0,2 percent in February.
